This piece is my first series on black canvas. I began thinking about instead of adding black paint to a white surface- what about beginning from black? So this piece is my first foray into shaping blackness from blackness on canvas -
inspired by the work ‘The Color Purple’- this piece encapsulates the dynamics of sisterhood. The bonds so vital and yet portraying the complexities of family.
When Medusa had an affair with the sea god Poseidon, Athena punished her. She turned Medusa into a hideous hag, making her hair into writhing snakes and her skin was turned a greenish hue. Anyone who locked gaze with Medusa was turned into stone. The hero Perseus was sent on a quest to kill Medusa.
Pandora's box is an artifact in Greek mythology connected with the myth of Pandora in Hesiod's c. 700 B.C. poem Works and Days. Hesiod reported that curiosity led her to open a container left in the care of her husband, thus releasing physical and emotional curses upon mankind.

For too long, folklore and astrology have been whitewashed. The black zodiac series gives blackness its chance to give breath and life to the icons of the zodiac. Personified in the 'blackest' paint created that is available to the public. The highlights used are the whitest white. Hair adds texture and transcendence.
